NEW EYEGLASSES
/It’s time for new eyeglasses! This morning as I adjusted the font size of my e-mail messages so I wouldn’t have to strain my eyes, I wondered how I could find an optometrist, considering I don’t speak the local language. I thought about putting out a request on an e-mail message board that I subscribe to, but instead I reached for my daily devotional. Today’s reading started out with these words,
“ ‘. . . the Lord Jesus . . . has sent me that you may receive your sight . . . —Acts 9:17’… When Paul received his sight, he also received spiritual insight into the Person of Jesus Christ” (Oswald Chambers, Utmost for His Highest, April 2).
Wow! Was that a timely message! What am I to make of it? It felt like a “hot potato” in my hands, but I knew I needed to “take the first bite” before passing it on or I might miss the purpose for which it came across my path this morning.
I could make various applications from this passage:
- Finding insight into the person of Jesus Christ
- How does God speak to us today?
- Have you been knocked off your horse lately?
And so on…
But what grabbed my heart is that the Holy Spirit touched me at my point of need at exactly the right moment. God watches everything closely (Ps. 11:4). There is nothing too insignificant…nothing escapes His watchful eye.
“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met” (Matthew 6:28 ff. The Message).
How is your eyesight today?
